Year of the Horse enthält vor allem Aufnahmen von der Welttournee 1996, aber auch Rückblicke auf Neil Youngs Karriere.Year of the Horse springs from a specific request made by Neil Young to his great admirer Jim Jarmusch with whom he had already made two videos and for him he had scored the film Dead Man. The live concerts were filmed in Europe and the US during Young's 1996 tour. The interviews and the behind-the-scenes footage are also largely from this tour, with the addition of some material from 1976 and 1986.
