Toro

"Toro" nennt man auf den Philippinen die Sex-Shows in den von Touristen
frequentierten Rotlichtvierteln Manilas. Einer von denen, die dort arbeiten,
ist Rolly. Er erzählt in diesem Film seine Geschichte. Er teilt sie mit vielen
Benachteiligten in der Dritten Welt.

Schon früh hat Rolly sein Geld auf dem Strich verdient. Rolly ist der Sohn
einer Prostituierten, seine Schwester Lisa mußte sich schon mit zwölf prostituieren.
Jetzt, da die Mutter Krebs hat, muß Rolly das Geld auch für sie und
den jüngeren Bruder Jake verdienen.

Eine von Rollys Kolleginnen ist Gigi. Ihr großer Traum ist es, nach Japan zu
gehen. Sie hat einen älteren Verehrer an der Angel, dem sie ab und zu etwas
Geld abknöpfen kann.
Gigi lebt mit der drogensüchtigen Rosita zusammen. Rosita hat mit 15 ein
Kind gekriegt und es anschließend zur Adoption freigegeben. Gern würde
sie ihren Sohn wiedersehen, aber die Adoptivmutter läßt es nicht zu. Auch
Rositas Freundin Sandra hat früher in einer Sex-Show gearbeitet, zusammen
mit Vio. Jetzt sind die beiden verheiratet und gehen bürgerlichen Berufen
nach. Jedenfalls bis die Wirtschaftskrise auch sie trifft und zwingt, sich an die
Touristen zu verkaufen.

Als Rollys Mutter stirbt, will er verhindern, daß der kleine Bruder in seine
Fußstapfen tritt, doch längst steht Jake unter dem schlechten Einfluß seines
Freundes Jojo. Als Rolly dahinterkommt, daß Jake zum Dieb geworden ist,
ist er gezwungen, ihn zu einem Verwandten aufs Land zu geben.

Auch Gigi erlebt eine Enttäuschung. Als sie das Geld für Japan zusammen
hat, wird es gestohlen, und sie selbst ist schuld daran. Wie überhaupt an
ihrer ganzen Misere. Radikal ändert sie ihr Leben und verläßt die Stadt.

Rosita trifft sich schließlich doch noch mit ihrem Sohn. Aber der ist ein verzogenes
unausstehliches Gör und will nichts von ihr wissen. Rosita versucht,
sich das Leben zu nehmen . . .

"Toro" is the Filipino name for the sex shows frequented by tourists in Manila's
red light districts. Rolly is one of the many who work in this milieu. This
film tells his story; it is a story he shares with many other marginalised individuals
all over the Third World.

Even at an early age, Rolly was used to earning a living as a prostitute. Rolly's
mother is also a prostitute and his sister, Lisa, even had to go out on the
game at the tender age of twelve. Rolly's mother has cancer, so now Rolly
must earn enough money for her and for his younger brother, Jake.

One of Rolly's fellow-prostitutes is Gigi. Her big dream is to go to Japan. Gigi
has found an older admirer whom she can squeeze for cash from time to
time.
Gigi lives with Rosita, a drug-addict. Rosita had a child when she was fifteen
which she gave away to be adopted. She longs to see her son again, but the
child's new mother won't allow her anywhere near him. Rosita's girlfriend,
Sandra, also used to work in a sex show, with Vio. Now they are both married
and have good, middle-class jobs. But then they too are hit by the
recession and are forced to start selling themselves to tourists once again.

Rolly's mother dies, and Rolly tries to prevent his younger brother from following
in his footsteps. Little bro, however, has already come under the bad
influence of his friend, Jojo. When Rolly finds out that Jake has been thieving,
he has no option but to send him away to live with relatives in the
country.

Gigi is bitterly disappointed when the money she had saved for her trip to
Japan is stolen. Worse still, it's her own fault. In fact, she's to blame for her
whole miserable situation. She decides to change her life drastically and
leaves the city.

Rosita finally manages to meet her son. But he turns out to be an insupportable,
spoilt brat who doesn't want anything to do with his birth mother.
Rosita tries to commit suicide . . .
